Starting additional sshd

To make recovery in case of failure easier, an additional sshd will
be started on port '9004'. If anything goes wrong with the running
ssh you can still connect to the additional one.

OK, Here goes the upgrade - but, apparently, apt-get dist-upgrade does not do it, anymore -

root@deskhost:~# apt-get -s dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So, after a little research, the new & better way to upgrade Ubuntu Server is with do-release-upgrade, which is a commandline version of update-manager, which does a few more things, and more intelligently, than just a simple dist-upgrade used to.

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/installing-upgrading.html

Here we go:

root@deskhost:~# do-release-upgrade
Checking for a new ubuntu release
Done Upgrade tool signature
Done Upgrade tool
Done downloading
extracting 'jaunty.tar.gz'
authenticate 'jaunty.tar.gz' against 'jaunty.tar.gz.gpg'

Reading cache

Checking package manager

Continue running under SSH?

This session appears to be running under ssh. It is not recommended
to perform a upgrade over ssh currently because in case of failure it
is harder to recover.

If you continue, a additional ssh daemon will be started at port
'9004'.
Do you want to continue?

Continue [yN] y

Nice - it starts an extra ssh server in case something goes wrong.

A couple of quick announcements:

http://www.desqhost.com is now being upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04

Our vMachine build infrastructure can now create preconfigured Ubuntu 9.04 VM's with all our various builds preinstalled - that way they start with less diskspace and more for YOU -
